Zirconium silicate is a naturally occurring mineral (zircon) and an important raw material widely used in ceramics, refractories, and foundry applications. It appears as a fine, off-white to beige powder after processing. Due to its high thermal stability, resistance to chemical attack, and ability to impart opacity, zirconium silicate plays a vital role in ceramic glazes, tiles, and sanitaryware manufacturing.

Molecular Structure and Reactions

Zirconium silicate consists of zirconium and silicon atoms bonded through oxygen in a robust crystal lattice. Its stable orthorhombic structure makes it resistant to heat and chemical degradation. While generally inert, it can react with strong alkalis or HF, forming zirconates or soluble zirconium salts.

Production Methods

1. Mineral Processing: Extracted from zircon sand deposits and refined by physical separation.
2. Grinding & Micronizing: Crushed and milled into fine powders for use in ceramics.
3. Purification: Magnetic separation and flotation remove iron oxides and impurities to achieve high whiteness.

Applications

A) Ceramics – Provides excellent opacity and whiteness in glazes and frits, enhancing brightness and surface finish of tiles and sanitaryware. It also improves abrasion resistance and strength.
B) Refractories – Used in zircon bricks, nozzles, and linings for furnaces due to its ability to withstand extreme temperatures without deformation.
C) Foundry Industry – Zircon flour and sands are used in molds and cores to resist molten metal penetration and thermal shock.
